Food Fight!

This past weekend my family and I were able to take part in a very special event called 2016 Food Fight at the Dulles Expo Center in Virginia. The NorthStar Church Network and my church (New Hope Church in Lorton, VA) hosted a 3 day mobile pack for Feed My Starving Children. Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding God’s children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children, and they ship these meals to their distribution partners.

In 3 days, volunteers came with giving hearts and packed four simple ingredients into each bag: dried vegetables, protein powder, soy and rice. When mixed with boiling water, each bag feeds 6 children.

Over the course of those 3 days, we saw many different churches, youth organizations, families and individuals donate their time and energy to pack the meals. In the end we cried tears of joy as they announced:

Number of meals packed for 2016 Food Fight: 5,044,248!!

Number of children to be fed for a year: 13,819!!

I therefore command you, “Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land.” Deuteronomy 15:11

FMSC meals have been distributed in nearly 70 countries through missionary partnerships at orphanages, schools, clinics, refugee camps and malnourishment centers.

FMSC believes in sustainability – they don’t simply send one shipment of food to a country. Instead, they continue to provide their mission partners with the food they need to maintain their feeding programs.

Would you consider joining us in the battle to end hunger?

What is faith?

My pastor gave a message about faith this weekend and it got me thinking about my idea of faith and how it has grown over the years.

As a child, I was raised in a home without religion or any mention of God. I was introduced to the idea of God when I had the opportunity to attend church with a friend after a Saturday night sleepover. I remember being in awe as I looked up at the beautiful stained glass windows and did my best to look like I fit in.Faceted_001 I asked my parents why we didn’t go to church they replied, “we don’t need that.” As I got older I was drawn to the idea of God.

A God.

My God.

I wondered, “Can he see me? Does he know my secrets? Does he really love me?” When I went to college I started searching for the answers to my questions. As I started reading the Bible, I had a lot of questions. I wanted proof that God existed. How can we be sure that Jesus was who he said he was? As I asked these questions, I would often get frustrated when the answer was, “that is faith.”

I found myself asking, “what is faith?” The dictionary definition of faith is: confidence or trust in a person or thing; a belief not based on proof.

Today I am a fully devoted Christian and I understand that faith means belief. To have faith means to know that something that can’t be seen is true. Those who have faith choose to trust that God is able and willing to do everything that He has promised us. Faithfulness is living a life that pleases God and using all that we have to please Him.

Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better. Colossians 1:10 (NLT)

As we know Jesus better, His divine power gives us everything we need for living a godly life. 2 Peter 1:3

As I have grown to learn to know God, I have seen the result of living faithfully. I am filled with joy, peace, and patience.

So on this Sunday I ask……What does the word ‘faith’ mean to you?

Encouragement on a rainy day

My grandparents lived in California my entire life, and I grew up on the East Coast, so when they came to visit, it was a big deal. When I was 10, they came to visit for Christmas. It was during this trip that my Mimi introduced me to God. When it was time for me to go to bed, Mimi would come in my room at night and we would say a prayer together. I was uncomfortable when I first started talking to God and said, “I don’t know what to say.” She encouraged me to talk to God as if he was sitting on the end of my bed. I remember asking her,” How does God hear everyone’s prayers?” She explained to me that God was like a large umbrella over the entire world. All these many years later, I think of my grandmother and smile on rainy days.umbrella

The good news is that God isn’t just there on rainy days. He’s always with us, during the sunny and cloudy days. On the sunny days (when life is good), we can thank him for all that he has provided us with. On those cloudy days, we need to remember to go to him first with our prayer for guidance, direction and understanding. Looking in the Bible, God never promised us that there wouldn’t be bad days. But he did promise us that he will never leave us or forsake us. He promised that NOTHING is impossible when we follow Him. He promised that you will work out everything for our good. He promised us that His love for us is steadfast and unfailing. All we need is faith!
